Abstract:Eighteen sixty marked an important beginning in Western explorations in China.Many explorers came to China and published travel account s.Although some researchers have dealt with western exploration in Tibet and northwestern China, the eastern half of the country has been overlooked.This article looks at the context of Western exploration in eastern China between 1860 and 1900, reviews the main travel narratives, and capsulates their main characteristics.
